The DM is the new interview

A comment says 'how do I start?' and most recruiters respond with a paragraph about themselves, a calendar link, and silence. The lead was real, the handling killed it. DMs are not a formality between content and a booked call. They are the interview, running in both directions, and the recruit is grading you on speed, warmth, and whether you feel like the video they liked.

Small yeses before big asks

Psychology calls it commitment consistency: people who take a small step are far more likely to take the next one. The first DM should ask for something tiny. A question about them, not a pitch about you. 'What made you curious?' costs the recruit nothing to answer, and answering is a yes. Three small yeses later, 'want to hop on a quick call this week?' feels like the obvious next step instead of a leap.

Speed is trust

A reply within the hour lands while the video's feeling is still alive. A reply the next day arrives after the feeling died and ten other creators posted. Response time is not customer service, it is conversion rate. This is exactly why the DM Pipeline in Downlines drafts openers the moment a comment converts and queues them for your approval: the words stay yours, the timing stops depending on you being glued to your phone.

One rule survives everything: no bots sending in your name. A recruit who joined a person and discovers a machine unsubscribes from the whole relationship. Drafts, queues, reminders, yes. Automation you did not read, never.
